How to deregister a vehicle in the Netherlands

Export and deregistration are handled through the relevant Dutch RDW procedures. Check which documents are required before arranging collection.

Who should arrange export?

A Dutch vehicle leaving for Poland normally needs export deregistration through RDW or an authorised export company. RDW advises sellers to ensure that the buyer exports in the buyer’s name, because the name on the export certificate affects who is responsible after deregistration.

Documents and handover

RDW normally asks for identification, the registration card with registration code or the relevant older papers, and number plates. After processing, you receive confirmation of deregistration, the registration papers and the export certificate (registration certificate part II). Requirements can vary for special cases.

Do not confuse the certificates

The vrijwaringsbewijs confirms that the Dutch registration responsibility has ended. The export certificate is used together with the registration document for registration abroad. Before deregistering, check which papers the receiving country requires. RDW explains that a simplified notification for a vehicle already abroad does not produce the same export certificate.
